Midstate teams win AAA softball openers

While Wilson Central’s softball team waits for its 10 a.m. entry into the state tournament, the Spring Fling began in earnest Tuesday at several venues across Murfreesboro and even at Wilson Central.
Half of the Class AAA softball tournament began at Starplex No. 1 with Dickson County defeating Munford 5-1 and Coffee County edging Gibbs 2-1. The losers will meet at 10 a.m. today, followed by the winners at around noon at McKnight.
Back at Starplex 1, Central will take on Maryville at 10 a.m., followed by Soddy-Daisy against Collierville at around noon. The losers will return for a 4 p.m. game, followed by the winners around 6.
At Wilson Central, the Division II-AA baseball tournament got underway Tuesday with McCallie edging Christian Brothers 3-2 and Baylor blanking Memphis University School 2-0.
Action resumes at 10 a.m. today with Memphis-rivals MUS and Christian Brothers battling to stay alive. The winner will return to play at 6 p.m.
Meantime, McCallie and Baylor will battle at 12:30 p.m. in a battle of Chattanooga with the loser dropping into the 6 p.m. loser’s bracket final and the winner advancing to Thursday’s championship round at Middle Tennessee State’s Reese Smith Field in Murfreesboro.
