Four CU tennis players named NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Four Cumberland tennis players – seniors Tais Lacerda Bezerra and Pedro Rodrigues and juniors Alena Gizdić and Andres Burgos – were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes during the national tournament last week in Mobile, Ala.

Student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.50 grade-point-average to be eligible for the award.

Bezerra and Rodrigues graduated this month, with Bezerra posting a 3.61 GPA in mathematics and Rodrigues a 3.75 in management. Gizdić carries a 3.71 GPA in psychology and Burgos has a 3.71 in business administration. A total of 101 women and 94 men were honored by the NAIA.

Garrett voted third team All-American golfer

Cumberland senior Austin Garrett earned third team All-America honors as selected by the NAIA-Men’s Golf Coaches Association All-America Committee and announced this week by the national office.

The Smithville native led the club in scoring average all four years of his career, posting a 72.8 average in 2013-14. Garrett won a pair of events during the fall, including the Bluegrass Fall Classic/Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational as well as the Millsaps Collegiate. He also placed second at the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational and the TNU Spring Invitational and was also third at the RedHawk Spring Classic.

Garrett was a first team All-Mid-South Conference selection in each of the last two seasons and was a TranSouth All-Conference honoree during his sophomore campaign as well. He posted 20 career top 5 finishes and placed in the top 10 on 26 occasions during his career.
