Life jacket record: To help call awareness to National Safe Boating Week (May 17-23) a world record life-jacket wearing contest is being held. Also, an upcoming "Wear a Life Jacket to Work" event is planned.

Both are fun events to promote a serious cause.

Hot shots: Danny Denton won last week's trap/sheet shoot at Cedar City Gun Club with a combined score of 70.

Dale Anthony, 12, took top trap honors with a 49, and Jamie Horford won Class B with a 44.


Fishing events: The TWRA has scheduled a number of youth fishing events around the state. Some of the events will coincide with the June 7 Free Fishing Day, while others will be held on into the summer.

The list of events is posted on the TWRA website (tnwildlife.org), and the list will be periodically updated as new events are added.


Youth fishing tournament: Mt. Juliet Christian School coach Mike Kittrell is overseeing a five-tournament series at Old Hickory Lake as part of the USA Bassin Next Generation Trail for youth fishermen.

Upcoming tournaments are May 31, June 21, July 19 and Aug. 9. Youngsters 18 and under are eligible and each must be accompanied by an adult angler.

Interscholastic shooting: An interscholastic trap-shooting team for Wilson County  youngsters is being organized. The team, which will be known as the Cedar City Straights, is open to youngsters age nine through high school, and will compete in state, regional and national competitions.

Training will be held at the Cedar City Gun Club. For information call Ben Schade at 615-478-8019.
