VARINA, Va. — A long Thursday ended with a 9-5 loss for the Lebanon Lions to Tallassee [Ala.] in the Babe Ruth Southeast Region.

Earlier, the Lions dropped a 15-5 decision to Lumber River [N.C.].

At 1-2, Lebanon has only a 9 a.m. CDT game Friday morning against Longwood [Fla.] to wrap up pool play. The top two teams in each of the five-team pools will advance to the bracket round Saturday.

Tallassee snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and broke open a 4-2 lead with five in the fifth. The Lions’ three-spot in the sixth wasn’t enough.

Lebanon out-hit Tallassee 10-7, but committed five errors to the opposition’s two as just three of the nine runs were earned against Jake Davis, Ryan Smith, John Doweless and Matthew Harper.

Ryan Smith doubled for Lebanon while Jared Bradshaw and Koty Lackey each lashed a pair of singles.

Earlier in the day, Lebanon’s one big inning couldn’t offset the two put up by Lumber River.

Lumber River scored twice in the top of the first inning and blew the game open with six in the second.

The Lions roared back with five runs in the bottom of the third. A series of walks set up a two-run single by Eli Teel.

But Lumber River came back with two in the fourth and one in the fifth before run-ruling the Lions with four in the sixth.

Lumber River racked up19 hits, including home runs by Matthew Strickland and Lucas Oxendine [who went 4-for-5], against Jake Davis, Chris Goodwin and Shannon Mansfield.

Lebanon finished with four hits, including two by Teel. Mansfield and Joseph Warren had the other singles.
