MJCA outlasts Watertown in five to open season

MT. JULIET — Mt. Juliet Christian outlasted visiting Watertown 25-20, 14-25, 25-21, 16 -25, 15-11 in season-opening action Monday.

Lauren Wankel totaled 10 kills and two blocks for the Lady Saints while Liz Russ finished with five kills as Mt. Juliet Christian won in Chris Padilla’s first match as coach.

MJCA will visit Madison Academy at 4:30 p.m. today.

Friendship falls in road in Stephens debut

COLUMBIA — Friendship Christian dropped its season opener at Zion Christian 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 in East-Middle District 1A Monday.

Tana Whited led the Lady Commanders with 31 assists, six digs, three aces and two kills while Autumn Josey totaled 12 kills, 10 digs and an assist; Madeline Holton 11 kills, eight digs and three aces; Savannah Robinson 12 kills and three aces and Taylor Patterson 13 digs as Friendship dropped its first match under new coach John Stephens.

Friendship will play host to district-rival St. Andrew’s-Sewanee at 5:30 p.m. today in the Lady Commanders’ home opener at the Bay Family Sportsplex.

Lady Bears open with sweep of Oakland

MURFREESBORO — Mt. Juliet opened its season Monday with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 triumph at Oakland’s Randy King Gym.

Cassidy Harris had 12 digs, six blocks and four aces for the Lady Bears while Amber Ehrhart added 18 assists and Sara Grace Wilson eight kills.

Mt. Juliet will play host to Cookeville today for the Lady Bears’ home opener. The freshmen will serve off at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity at 5 and varsity at 6.
