MT. JULIET — The Mt. Juliet Christian Academy Saints dropped their home opener Friday night, allowing over 400 rushing yards to Whitwell in a 45-7 loss at Suey Field.

Whitwell scored the first five times it had the ball in building up a 38-7 halftime lead. Tyler Tate led the way for the Tigers with four touchdowns on six carries and 177 yards.

"There were a lot of missed tackles," Dan Davis said following his debut game as Mt. Juliet Christian coach. "We spotted them way too many points early. That changes our game plan."

The scoring started on the second offensive play when Cody Ingrassia raced around left end, hit the corner and raced 62 yards for the touchdown. The conversion was run by Jake Sartin and 61 seconds into the game the score was 8-0.

After a three-and-out by the Saints, the Tigers took over at their own 33 and drove 67 yards capped by a 44-yard run by Clay McHone. The run was made by Ingrassia and the score was 16-0 late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Whitwell quarterback Tate scored twice in a 47-second period to put the game out of reach. The first score was on a 10-play, 35-yard drive set up by a fumble recovery by the Tiger defense. It was a 1-yard run and McHone scored on the conversion.

The second score came on a long run by Tate - this one of 60 yards - that made the score 30-0.

Mt Juliet Christian Academy got on the board on a short run by Rikesh Vanmali. The drive was set up by a pass from Vanmali to Preston Sloan. Landon Boyd kicked the point after and it was 30-7.

Whitwell scored once more before half as Tate ran again, this time from 36 yards out, to make the halftime score 38-7.

Tate closed out the scoring early in the second half less than a minute in with a 75-yard run - his fourth score of the night.

From there, the clock ran continuously due to the mercy rule.

"Half of our team are freshmen," Davis said. "That was their first time under the lights playing varsity."

Mt Juliet Christian Academy will next play in two weeks at Middle Tennessee Christian in Murfreesboro.
