GLADEVILLE- LaVergne held off a late fourth-quarter surge by the Wildcats and defeated Wilson Central 27-21, in a battle of winless teams.

RoShea Grays led the ground attack for LaVergne with 158 yards and three touchdowns. He scored his first one just two minutes into the game and was responsible for the Wolverines’ only touchdown of the quarter.

Wilson Central struggled to find its footing early as they relied on a stable of runners in the opening quarter. The Wildcats had a 70-yard touchdown reception erased midway through the quarter after a personal foul on the play.

The Wildcats regained and held the ball for almost the entire second quarter on their first possession after the big penalty. They capped off a 23-play drive with a D’Sean Osborne 2-yard touchdown run to pull even with 3:14 remaining in the quarter.

The Wolverine offense was unable to reach the end zone on the following drive after driving the ball to the 7-yard line. The teams went into halftime tied 7-7.

Grays and junior quarterback Drew Howard sparked the LaVergne offense in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Grays found the end zone for the second time on a 7-yard run with 8:57 remaining in the quarter.

Howard connected with Jordan Mao for a 33-yard touchdown just four minutes later and the Wolverines ended the quarter with a 20-7 lead.

Grays continued his big night with his third touchdown run from 7 yards with 9:51 remaining and the Wolverines appeared to be walking to victory with a 27-7 lead.

Wilson Central received a boost from their special teams as Dakivian Moore returned the kickoff 43 yards to the LaVergne 49.

The Wildcats used just under three minutes to cap a nine-play drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cody Ray to tight end Zack Dover.

The Wildcats’ ensuing onside kick sailed out of bounds and LaVergne began the next drive from its own 39. The Wolverines punted four plays later.

Wilson Central followed with another touchdown from senior Hunter Wilson as he rushed for 5 yards to score with 2:36 remaining in the game.

The Wildcats trailed 27-21 as they attempted their next onside kick, which was recovered at the Wolverine 47.

The Wildcat offensive scheme switched to short passes from Ray. He attempted 21 of his 25 passes in the second half and completed 13 of his 15 passes in the half. He had not thrown an interception until 1:52 remaining in the game on Central’s final drive.

The Wolverines fumbled with one second left in the game and the Wildcats attempted one last pass attempt from the 11, which fell incomplete in the end zone.

LaVergne climbed to 1-1 on the season and Wilson Central fell to 0-2.
