Isidora Markovic tallied 13 kills and Mikayla Wickham added 11 in the win. Rachel Clement posted 18 assists and Sara Glassman collected 15.
The Phoenix opened up the first set with three straight points but four straight points for the Bears evened the score at eight. Five unanswered points for the squad helped them to a 13-8 advantage. A 6-3 run helped CU stay in the lead by seven, 19-12. Cumberland allowed Shawnee State to score just three more points in the opening frame, before tacking on five consecutive points for a 25-15 opening set win.
Cumberland got off to a strong start in the second stanza, taking a 10-5 lead and stretching the advantage 13-6. A 6-2 run for the Bears pulled them within three points of the Phoenix, 15-12 with help from Christina Shelton tallying three kills. A point for Wickham, an error and a service ace kept the Phoenix on top, 20-15. Two kills from Shelton, one from Emily Mckibben and an attack error on the Phoenix cut the Bears deficit to two, 22-20.
A kill by Masa Nalovic was responded with a point by Carson Roney and Isidora Markovic followed with a point as well. Mckibben added a point for the Bears and an attack error on the Phoenix played in the Bears favor pulling them within one, 24-23. A kill by Markovic closed out the second set for the Phoenix, 25-23.
Shawnee State started the final frame pulling ahead by two, 5-3. The set was tied three more times before the Phoenix went on a 7-0 spurt to regain the lead, 13-7. SSU tacked on two more points but Cumberland continued to build on the advantage to take a seven point lead, 19-12. The Phoenix held the Bears off to three more points in the set. Five straight points for CU secured the final set, 25-15 leading the Phoenix to sweep over Shawnee State.
Deanna Smith recorded 22 assists for the Bears and two players added double-figure digs. Shawnee State recorded five blocks in the match and hit .064.
The Phoenix will be back in action Saturday at Pikeville at noon CDT.
