Both teams went point-for-point tying the score six times until an error on the Phoenix (11-7, 2-2 Mid-South) sparked an eight point run for the Patriots sending them to a 14-9 advantage. A kill by Abby Akins ended the streak but the University of the Cumberlands (7-7, 1-3 Mid-South) tacked on three more points to stay ahead 16-9.
A 3-1 run for Cumberland kept them within five, but UC responded with six unanswered points. Two errors on UC gave Cumberland their final two points in the frame before two errors on the Phoenix helped the Patriots secure the opening frame, 25-14.
UC pulled ahead early in the second frame, 9-5 and continued to build on the advantage scoring four straight points for a 14-6 lead. A 5-3 run for the Phoenix cut the deficit to six, 17-11 but the University of the Cumberlands responded with a kill by Severs.
Cumberland made a comeback, holding the Patriots off to just three points and the Phoenix tallying eight to knot the score at 22. An attack error helped the Phoenix regained the lead, but errors on Cumberland played in the University of the Cumberlands favor, scoring three of their last four points. A service ace by Jennifer Stein tallied the final point in the stanza for the Patriots for the 26-24 win.
CU tied the final set five times, knotting the score at six before a point from Severs and two errors on the Phoenix helped the Patriots pull ahead by three, 9-6. A kill by Isidora Markovic, Amanda Worrell and an error helped the squad stay within three, 13-10.
Three consecutive points for UC was ended with a block by Masa Nalovic. A kill and a service ace by Tara Routliffe was quickly responded with six straight points for Cumberland. The Patriots closed out the final set scoring seven unanswered points, three errors, three kills and one service ace.
Kara Snell paced the Phoenix with 16 digs and Rachel Clement added 12 assists on the night. Markovic posted eight kills and Worrell tallied seven for the squad.
Routliffe posted 24 digs and Mackenzie Koch collected seven kills for the Patriots. UC added six blocks in the match and hit .125 percent.
The Phoenix will continue Mid-South Conference play by playing host to Life University on Friday at 6 p.m.
