Rosario, Croley stay in main draw with wins

TOPEKA, Kans. — Cumberland seniors Sammy Rosario and Nate Croley remained in the main draw with a pair of victories and junior Sean Nguyen also picked up two wins in Friday’s first session at the 60th Annual NAIA Wrestling Championships.

Third-ranked Rosario picked up two victories at 141, advancing to Friday’s night’s quarterfinals. The Cartersville, Ga., native pinned Graceland’s 12th-ranked Cartland Allen a 2:57 in his first bout and recorded a 9-1 major decision versus Menlo’s 13th-ranked Blaysen Terukina.

Rosario will battle fourth-ranked Jake Sinkovics from the University of the Cumberlands in the quarterfinals. Rosario split two bouts with Sinkovics this year.

Eight-ranked Croley also won his first two matches at 157, pinning Missouri Baptist’s Clayton Wegener at 5:57 before registering a 16-1 technical fall at 2:41 over Bacone’s Courtney Shaver. The Pigeon Forge native will take on Embry-Riddle’s 10th-ranked James Williams in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Nguyen posted a 9-0 major decision over Baker’s Zane Baugh at 125 before dropping an 8-2 decision to Menlo’s third-ranked Troy Lakin. The Spring Hill, Fla., native collected a 14-3 major secision against Brewton-Parker’s Randy McCary, Jr. He will take on Concordia’s 13th-ranked Dmitri Smith in the backdraw tonight.

Senior Orlando Nawade dropped his first bout at 174, a 10-1 major decision to Wayland Baptist’s second-ranked Jose Alvarez, but came back with a 14-7 decision versus Embry-Riddle’s ninth-rated Brenn Schiess in the backdraw. He will take on Jamestown’s Mike Zupan later Friday.

Senior and fifth-ranked Kyle Delaune lost by fall at 1:19 to Montana State-Northern’s second-ranked Ben Stroh in his first match. He received a bye in the backdraw and will take on Menlo’s Tyler Noon on Friday evening.
