Cheating fisherman: A Minnesota fisherman has been sentenced to a week in jail for cheating in a fishing tournament.

Turkey concerns: There are reports of a reduced spring turkey hatch in some areas of the state, likely due to the cold, wet weather that arrived while the birds were nesting.

The drop-off won’t affect this fall’s October season or even next spring’s season in terms of longbeards, but the number of jakes and future nesting hens will be reduced.

TWRA biologists will monitor the situation and adjust bag limits in specific counties if it deems it necessary.

Cheating fisherman: A Minnesota fisherman has been sentenced to a week in jail for cheating in a fishing tournament.

The 72-year-old man pleaded guilty to a felony charge of theft by swindle for entering two previously-caught fish in a tournament.

He caught two Northern pike in another lake and brought them to the lake where the tournament was being held and submitted them in the competition.

A judge chastised him by saying he cast a shadow on all tournament fishing, and added a $200 fine to his week in jail. He got off easy; the charges could have drawn a maximum penalty of five years in jail and/or a $10,000 fine.

Hunter-safety reminder: With the fall hunting seasons at hand, the TWRA reminds residents that anyone born after Jan.1, 1969, must complete a Hunter Education Course in order to get a license.

There is a one-time Apprentice License available for those who might neglect completing the Hunter Education Course; they can hunt for one year as long as they are in the company of an adult who has completed the course.

Detailed information about various license requirements and options is available at the TWRA website.

Trap shoot: Matthews Cantrell shot the high round at the Cedar City Gun Club’s weekly trap shot last week, breaking 48 of 50 targets.

For information about the shoot, or other area shooting events, contact Ben Schade at the Gun Club.
