Wilson County Fair officials reported record-breaking attendance for the fair’s first weekend.

According to officials, 223,255 people attended the fair’s opening weekend, surpassing the previous record, set in 2009, by more than 15,000 people.

Fair officials attributed the record-breaking crowd to cool weather and many new features of this year’s fair.

And the fair’s $1,000 Cash Giveaway doesn’t hurt either.

Friday through Monday, officials drew one winner each night to take home $1,000.

Brandi Barnes of Lebanon won Friday; Judy Dodd of Lebanon won Saturday; Melissa McNabb of Mt. Juliet won Sunday.

Fair officials will again give away $1,000 on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Tuesday, though, the Great Giveaway drawing winner will choose among a 2013 Ford Focus, 2013 Dodge Journey, 2013 Hyundai Elantra, 2013 Chevy Malibu, 2013 John Deere 5045 Tractor and Loader or a 2013 John Deere XUV 825i Gator with cab and air.

Also on Tuesday, 2- and 3-year-old girls will compete in the Doll Parade Division I pageant.

Gates, buildings and the carnival open at 5 p.m. Tuesday for “Taste the Homegrown Fun Day – Agriculture at its best.”

Along those lines, the day’s events will include a beef cattle show, a feeder pig show and a “hog-o-rama.”

Other events will include go-cart races and a photo contest.

Admission for adults is $7, for children ages 6-12 is $5 and for children ages 5 and under is free.

The fair will draw to a close for the evening at 10 p.m. with the nightly fireworks show.
