The Jimmy Floyd Family Center is again gearing up to hold one of the coolest events in Wilson County – literally.
The 2014 Polar Plunge is set for Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. at the Jimmy Floyd Family Center at 511 N. Castle Heights Ave in Lebanon.
The annual event, now in it’s 14th year at the Jimmy Floyd Family Center, is a way to help Wilson County Special Olympics athletes.
Those “plungers” looking to participate collect pledges from friends and family in exchange for jumping into the icy waters of the outdoor pool at the Jimmy Floyd Family Center.
The participant with the top donation total will be rewarded with a one-year individual membership to the Jimmy Floyd Family Center. Those participants with at least $30 worth of donations will receive a special Polar Plunge t-shirt and other prizes announced at the event.
While typical attire consists of swimsuits and pool gear, participants are also invited to wear costumes of their choice, and the top costume at the event will receive a prize. Costume judging will begin at 8:55 a.m., with the plunge shortly after at 9 a.m.
Additionally, donations are welcome for those not interested in braving the freezing waters, and everyone is invited to come out for the event and watch those plunging in action.
Participants will have locker rooms available to them for changing, and coffee and hot chocolate will be served to all registrants to help them warm back up.
Interested plungers can register online at specialolympicstn.org.
Family and friends can sponsor plungers online through First Giving at firstgiving.com/sotn. Anyone can also participate by helping sponsor the event with cash donations and prizes.
Contact Cindy Baker, Jimmy Floyd Family Center Aquatics Director, at 615-453-4545 for sponsor information.
Paper registration and donation forms can also be picked up at the front desk of the Jimmy Floyd Family Center.
