Saturday is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. Wilson County is home to many mom and pops, some that have been operating for years.
National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day celebrates small business owners. These individuals spend countless hours nurturing and growing their young enterprises.
Lynn Adams, who is the owner of Adams Wholesale, has been in business in Lebanon since 1977. Her shop is located on South Maple Street, where they supply photo framing needs.
“I do custom picture framing, we also have ready-made frames and we do mattes and glass and we sell artwork,” said Adams.
The business began as simply wholesale to patrons throughout the Southeast, but Adams said they opened the retail portion of the business about 25 years ago.
“We get a lot of locals, and we get a lot of people from Mt. Juliet and surrounding areas,” Adams said.
The business also does work for local schools, hospitals and banks, in addition to its retail clients.
Another shop in Lebanon actually began in a small log cabin beside the owners home.
Judy Murphy, who is the proprietor of Judy’s Boutique, said she has been in business for 21 years.
“I started out in a little log cabin beside my home in Gladeville,” she said. “Then I moved to Lebanon and opened up the store beside Winfrey Jewelers.”
The store currently calls Heritage Place Shopping Center home.
“I had worked for the phone company for 25 years, then was able to stay home and keep books for my husband,” Murphy said. “We had a little girl later in life that I had to stay home with.”
This stay-at-home-mom opened a shop in the cabin beside her home.
“God just blessed me so much that I outgrew that little store,” said Murphy.
The shop carries fine clothing and hard-to-find accessories.
“I try to find as many USA-made clothing suppliers as I can to help people get back to work. That is one of my goals,” Murphy said.
Small businesses are vital to communities and provide many different products and services.
According to the website holidayinsights.com, “[small businesses] provide stellar and personal service support. When you call, you are more likely to get a real, live person. And unlike big national chains, they know their products. They are outstanding performers in niche markets. In manufacturing, they create many new concepts and ideas, making them creators of new products.”
