Superheroes will be out in full force next month.

For the second year, Wilson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is looking for some extra special people to help in the fight against child abuse.

The month of April is child abuse awareness month and in just a few weeks, CASA is set to hold its second annual Superhero 5K and Kids 50 Yard Dash, with all proceeds going to benefit CASA in order to help serve abused children in the community.

CASA is a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to provide a voice in court for children who are victims of abuse or neglect.

Participants of all ages can dress up in their favorite superhero costume and come out and enjoy a day of fun activities at the fairgrounds for a good cause.

This year the annual Lebanon Easter Egg Hunt will take place after the race, as the event will be held the day before Easter.

The event is set to take place April 19 at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center in Lebanon, with a costume contest at 8:15 a.m., the kids 50-yard dash at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K race beginning at 9 a.m.

The registration fee is $25 for the 5K for adults and $10 for ages 5-17. There is also a “sleep-in” option for $20, which includes a t-shirt and an option to sleep-in the morning of the race while still donating to the cause. Children can compete in the 50-yard dash at no cost.

In the first annual Superhero 5K last year, around 85 superheroes participated, with 20 kids joining in on the 50-yard dash. The event raised $4,000.

Awards will be given for best individual costume and best family costume. There will also be awards for overall winner, overall female, overall male and overall child. Award will also be given for the top three finishers in each age division for each gender. Age divisions are: under 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over. All children participating in the 50-yard dash will receive a participant medal.

Along with participants in the race and festivities, CASA is also looking for volunteers to help out with the event.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Mail-in and online registrations will be accepted through April 18. Registration packets can then be picked up at the Ward Ag Center on April 18 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
