About nine inmates picked up in Rutherford County en route to Savannah, Ga. had about a three-hour layover in Wilson County on Thursday after a scuffle sent one prisoner to the hospital.

Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said the incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 40 eastbound near mile marker 247.

Bryan said an independent transport company picked up inmates at the Rutherford County Jail and was headed to Savannah, Ga. when two inmates in the back of the van got into an altercation. One inmate suffered a cut to his head and was taken to University Medical Center.

Bryan said the other inmates were taken to the Wilson County Jail and placed in a holding cell while the injured inmate received treatment.

“We didn’t want to leave them out on the side of the interstate,” Bryan said.

Following about a three-hour stay, the inmates were loaded into the transport van again to continue the trip. Bryan said use of independent transport companies by law enforcement agencies is not uncommon to move prisoners from one location to another and saves money in many cases.
