The Capitol Theatre will provide the stage for the Battle of the Bands in hopes of raising awareness on local musical talents.
“There’s nothing like this in the area,” said Melody VanNus, Capitol Theatre’s marketing manager, “and it would be a great showcase for unheard-of bands.”
VanNus said the competition is a three-step process and begins with interested bands submitting recordings to the Capitol Theatre.
Bands have until Sept. 1 to submit live audio recordings, or as close to live as possible, or upload recordings to a variety of music platforms such as YouTube, SoundCloud and ReverbNation. Links to websites that include recordings will be accepted.
VanNus said there aren’t any specifics about band entries, and all ages and styles are welcomed.
She said most of the band entries so far have been primarily bands that don’t perform full-time, but appear to play as a hobby.
Capitol Theatre staff will then pick their top four bands, which will compete in the Oct. 11 show. Chosen bands will be announced Sept. 8 via the Capitol Theatre Facebook, email and on air at WANT 98.9 FM.
Each band will play a 20-minute set during its portion of the show. Bands will be allowed to play as many songs as they want, as long as they stay within 20 minutes.
Winners will be determined based on audience tweets and a record producer’s scores. Each portion will count for half of the overall score. The producer will be announced later.
Winner will receive a $1,000 grand prize and plaque.
“I think it will be a lot of fun. We have a low ticket price of $10, and the concession stand will be fully stocked.” VanNus said.
Bands will be allowed to sell CDs and clothing at the event.
