Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers said a man struck by a car while walking in Mt. Juliet early Wednesday morning died.

According to Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan, the man was walking at about 6 a.m. along East Division Street between Mt. Juliet and Highway 109 when a car struck him.

Troopers later identified the man as James Buchanan, 19, of Antioch.

“He had run out of gas and was walking,” said Bryan.

According to the THP report , Buchanan was struck by a car driven by Iris J. Shelton, of Mt. Juliet. The report says Shelton was driving a 2002 Buick Rendevous. The report said "darkness and fog" were contributing factors in the accident.

Buchanan, who sustained head injuries, was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died.

Wilson Emergency Management Agency Director John Jewell said LifeFlight helicopters were called to the scene, but Buchanan couldn't be taken by helicopter due to the fog.

According to THP, no citations or criminal charges were issued related to the accident.
