New Leash on Life is celebrating “Back in Black.” Did you know that pets in black often wait longer than their lighter-colored counterparts to get adopted? That’s why New Leash on Life is partnering with Best Friends Animal Society as we recognize our all black or almost black dogs and cats by offering reduced adoption fees.
Cato, a black and white Lab/Border Collie mix, is one of the fabulous dogs being spotlighted. Cato, and his nine other Hunger Games siblings, were abandoned at just 3 weeks old and left to fend for themselves. Sweet Cato was adopted at 3 months but came back to our shelter through no fault of his own. Now our big boy Cato is 11 months old and weighs 55 pounds.
Cato’s previous mommy taught him sit, stay and down. She also reported that he loves to play and is easily excitable – he’d love a running companion. Cato has been neutered, micro-chipped and is current on vaccinations. With an approved application, he can be your new family member for $50 (his adoption fee reduced from $85). All New Leash on life dogs must be adopted to families willing to have their pets be allowed inside – especially at night.
Michael is one of the Good Times kittens. He and his litter mates, Jay-Jay and Thelma, were found abandoned when they were very very young. Now they are ready for their forever homes. Michael is almost 4 months old, weighs 2.12 pounds and is a handsome mostly black feline. He is very loving and playful. He romps around the cat room, playing with the toys and chasing the other kittens and cats. Michael is litter box trained and will be neutered, micro-chipped and current on vaccinations prior to adoption. With an approved application, you can adopt Michael for $85. Adoption Center Policy: All cats must be indoor only and shall not be declawed.
Not sure if you’re ready to commit to adoption? Ask about our 7-day Sleepover Program for dogs and cats. If you already have your limit of four-legged family members, please consider becoming a ‘Guardian’ to help homeless pets each month. Just visit: http://www.newleashonline.org and click on Programs, then Guardian Guild for more information.

Axie is a sweet kitty - and a pretty kitty - all rolled into one. She is about 1 year old - a buff-colored tabby - found as a stray but in her foster home, she is friendly to all people, children and dogs. Axie is healthy - spayed, current on shots and tested leukemia negative. This is a cat that will move into your home and be comfortable quickly as a family pet. For info on adopting Axie, contact the foster Jennie at 615-210-2268.
This is Duke - we are calling him Super Duke because he is an exceptionally happy and well-mannered boy. He is about 3 years old - found as a stray but no owner has claimed him. Duke is mostly Basset Hound - maybe some beagle mixed in. He is in a foster home with other dogs, cats and children - and does great with all of them. He is housetrained in his foster home, too. Duke is healthy - current on shots, heartworm negative and neutered. He would make a fun and lovable pet. For info on Duke, contact his foster - Dawn at 352-318-2000.
