ISOLA, Miss. – New Leash on Life and Animal Rescue Corps, working with the Humphreys County, Miss. Sheriff’s Office, removed 12 dogs from the property of a suspected dog fighting operation Friday about an hour and a half north of Jackson, Miss. in a rescue mission called Operation Delta Dogs.
Acting on a tip from a rescue partner, ARC offered assistance in the case to the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office who acted immediately putting plans into place to bring in ARC’s specialized team to seize the dogs, including 11 American pit bull terriers and one Rottweiler. The property owner was arrested.
“The dogs were living outside without any care in the increasing Mississippi heat on heavy chains bolted and pad locked into their collars. They are caked with mud, they have pressure sores and are extremely underweight and dehydrated,” said ARC President Scotlund Haisley. “Despite the extreme neglect and abuse they have endured, the dogs are all very eager for affection.”
ARC identified dogfighting paraphernalia such as a rope tied to a tree used for strengthening dogs’ jaws, a pen used for training dogs to fight, security cameras, and the majority of the dogs have scarring on their faces and chests.
“We do not tolerate animal cruelty in our community and I recognized that we needed assistance in order to act quickly,” said Humphreys County Sheriff J.D. Roseman. “The Animal Rescue Corps team was on the ground in less than 48 hours to rescue these dogs.”
All the animals on the property will be relocated to New Leash on Life’s emergency shelter at the Cumberland Valley Shows warehouse in Lebanon. Their daily care and medical needs will be met by New Leash on Life and ARC volunteers until their custody is determined and they can be assessed for placement and taken to ARC placement partners around the country.
Animal Rescue Corps performed the rescue in conjunction with the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office; Belzoni Animal Rescue Kennel in Belzoni, Miss.; New Leash on Life; Nashville PITTIE, a pit bull rescue in Nashville; and Mayday Pit Bull Rescue of Phoenix, Ariz.
