Tennessee Valley Authority officials said Tuesday a preferred route for a new transmission line in Lebanon is now identified.

TVA held an open house in September at Cedars of Lebanon to get public feedback on proposed power system improvements.

“Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperative needs a new substation here to power a lot of growth in the area, so we have to get a line from our line to the substation,” said Myra Ireland, a TVA spokesperson.

The 5-mile transmission line would provide additional power for industrial growth by connecting to a new Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corp. substation near State Route 840.

“Our goal is to make a good decision that affects the least amount of people and properties, so public input is the best way to do that,” said Ireland.

TVA officials said the selected route is expected to have the least impact on the area, based on public input from September’s open house and additional evaluation of other factors, including cost, engineering and environmental impacts. A National Environmental Policy Act review is pending.

TVA officials now plan to meet with property owners along the proposed right-of-way to get easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line.

TVA is expected to perform field and environmental surveys in spring 2014 and start acquiring easements in winter 2014-15. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2015 and be completed during fall 2015.

The new substation would be located on the northeast corner of the Vesta Road/Couchville Pike interchange on State Route 840.

TVA would provide power to the new substation via a 5-mile line from the Wilson-Lebanon 161-kilovolt line. The new line would parallel State Route 840 and would consist of alternative segments 1, 2, 12 and 13.
