A backpack giveaway in memory of Reshardo Juantai Clemmons will be held Saturday.

Clemmons’ aunt, Vivian Butler, said the idea for the backpack giveaway started out two years ago following the death of her nephew.

“We wanted to do this in his honor and keep his dreams and memory alive,” Butler said. “He was always a giving person and would always give whatever he could to help children.”

She said she, along with Clemmons’ mother, Juanita Clemmons, family and friends then put their heads together and decided a backpack giveaway would be the best way to give something back to the community in his name.

Last year, Butler said they handed out 500 backpacks family and friends bought and filled with varying school supplies.

“It was such a success last year we’re now doing it for the second year,” Butler said.

This year, they again will do the same, Butler said, and give away 500 backpacks at the event from 10 a.m. until noon at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center in the open-air pavilion.

Backpacks will be available for children in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade, and each backpack is set to be filled with grade-appropriate school supplies to be handed out. Wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is a limit of one backpack per child, and the child must be present to receive the backpack.

“This year several people participated in the Cold Water Challenge and donated to the backpack giveaway that way,” Butler said.

Butler said a couple of guest speakers were also on tap to speak throughout the event Saturday.

The Clemmons and Oldham families thanked all of those who contributed to the event to make it a success.
