I have heard many concerns regarding Walmart’s acceptance of coupons. Many have found themselves challenged when it comes to using coupons at Walmart. First of all, let me remind you each store can vary according to the manager’s discretion. However, there are some basic rules to follow when shopping at Walmart.
Let’s review their policy:
• It matches competitor ads. Prices will be matched for loyalty shopper card prices, however, if the deal is given at the competitor based on a specific number of items purchased, this will not apply to your purchase of a single item. For example, if Kroger has dressing for $1.25 with a Kroger card, Walmart will match it. But, if the dressing is in a mega deal where the requirement is to purchase 10, it will not generally match this.
Remember, the ad must have the specific price point of the item, and the description – ounces, etc. – must match. On buy one, get one free deals, the ad must state a specific retail value. Walmart will not give you this deal based off of their shelf price.
• It does not double coupons. They do not generally accept other store coupons, however, upon manager’s discretion some stores accept manufacturer coupons from other stores unless they say “in store only.”
Catalina from other stores are accepted if they state manufacturer and have a specific regular retail amount for the product shown and do not say “redeemable only at.”
Let me clarify this a bit. Catalina generally do state manufacturer even though they were printed at a specific store. As long as the Catalina does not say it can only be used at that store it is a coupon that will be redeemed to Walmart from the manufacturer. Very rarely, however, do I see Catalina that gives the specific price point of the item. Register Rewards, although they are Catalina, are usually excluded from this rule.
Overage is given in cash or rolled over onto other products if the coupon exceeds the value of the item. Most all Walmarts do this. But, again the manager has final discretion.
• It accepts most Internet-printable coupons. Now this is an area where coupons are generally scrutinized a little more. Due to the increase in extreme couponing, these coupons are checked for copying, faulty coupons etc. I have found this area to not be worth trying myself. I have found using freestanding coupons much easier to use and printables not worth the effort. If you do choose to use these coupons, I would personally ask the customer service manager or store manager their specific policy on this before trying to use them. This way you will have permission and will know who you talked with when you get to the checkout.
• Some will allow you to use a buy one, get one free coupon with another money-off coupon for the one for which you are paying full price. This will vary per store. I have seen some who do accept this and some who don’t. Again ask before you try, it saves frustration and embarrassment.
• Most stores will allow a competitor ad with a coupon.
Overall, my advice would be Walmart can save you money if you shop wisely, however, grocery stores often can give you more for your money because of their more consumer friendly policies. To get the most for your money at Walmart you will need to competitor ad shop and apply coupons to your purchase. Otherwise, you will find even generic can end up costing you more money.
Don’t get discouraged when couponing at Walmart. Slow and steady does it.
