Ann Haney: Sizzlin' summer savings

Summer may mean many things to different people. Vacations may fill the agenda, which lead to an increase in hotel, gas and food expenses. Summer home remodel projects may infiltrate your schedule and tap into the budget as well, not to mention family reunions, summer gatherings, picnics and parties.

Summer may mean many things to different people. Vacations may fill the agenda, which lead to an increase in hotel, gas and food expenses. Summer home remodel projects may infiltrate your schedule and tap into the budget as well, not to mention family reunions, summer gatherings, picnics and parties.

With all the fun that summer brings it can put a crunch on your pocketbook with added expenses. How can we save money without cutting out the fun?

One way to get great discounts when planning that summer vacation is by signing up for AAA. Especially if your plans will include a lot of hotel stays. Most hotels offer discounts up to twenty percent off of each night’s stay. Depending on the hotel many have reward programs where you can earn free nights. For instance, with the Marriot Rewards program you could get discounts for being an AAA member, as well as earning points in their summer promotional for accumulating free nights. If your vacation includes theme park attractions or other specific destinations triple AAA offers many specials.

Here is another incentive for those who attend conventions. Many conventions offer parking vouchers allowing free or discounted parking. Be sure and ask about this feature if you are attending an upcoming convention.

Saving on gas is just a click away on your smartphone with the Gas Buddy app that lists all the gas stations in your immediate area with price per gallon and address. In other words, it pays to price shop before you stop. During the summer months you can always look forward to double fuel points at Kroger’s with the coupon on kroger.com/fuel.

Always check out food discounts for fine dining, as well as fast food by downloading the Coupon Sherpa app, which updates to include restaurants in your present location. Simply click on the place you wish to eat, show the waiter the coupon and receive a great discount. Many discounts will be as much as fifty percent off your order while others might be free appetizers or desserts.

When it comes to planning the perfect summer party or family reunion shopping online at party stores may be in your agenda. Sign up free at ebates.com and shop through this site to earn cash back on your purchases. Don’t forget to check out retailmenot.com for extra discounts for a free shipping code. This will also be the way to go when it comes to home remodeling repairs, as well as going to ebay.com where many times you will find coupons for auction for Lowe’s or Home Depot.

As always don’t be afraid to ask for any specials when booking a place to stay, car to rent or anything else. Many times there are specials in place, but the one who doesn’t ask doesn’t receive. Have a happy and safe summer with great savings.
