A private act asking for a hotel/motel tax increase in Wilson County is currently waiting in subcommittee.
Rep. Mark Pody said the bill was originally scheduled to be heard Tuesday in the Local Government Subcommittee, but the chairman elected to push back the discussion.
“It is coming up in two weeks from [Tuesday],” Pody said.
The companion in the Senate is also on hold.
Two other private acts requested in Wilson County have yet to be filed due to questions on language. Pody said a private act requesting a change in the number of school board members and a request for a $1 ticket surcharge for events at the Ward Ag Center are still being drafted.
“The school board one, it’s not filed yet. [Sen.] Mae [Beavers] has Senate staff drafting that one,” said Pody.
The request for the $1 fee is also in a holding pattern until language can be approved.
“Our attorneys here have been working with County Attorney Mike Jennings to get the language right. I won’t file that until they have worked out the language,” Pody said.
Wilson County Commissioner Jeff Joines said the proposed 1-cent hotel/motel tax increase proceeds would benefit funding for an Expo Center planned for the Wilson County Fairgrounds, but it’s not a deal breaker to get the project off the ground.
Joines said the plans may have to be modified to scale down the project some, but other funding sources, such as current revenues from the county’s 5-cent hotel/motel tax and revenues generated from the center itself, would pay for the construction and maintenance.
