That ‘70s Show-mance

Be still my heart I cannot believe my eyes and ears, Jackie and Kelso are having a baby!

Ok, Ok, to be fair Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are having a baby, a real life baby, which is almost as mind blowing as a pregnancy on a TV show plotline. Who am I kidding; it is way more exciting to live this fairytale in real life than it ever was on screen.

Let me just preface by pointing out that Jackie (Kunis) and Kelso (Kutcher) are main characters from one of the greatest period sitcoms to ever grace the silver screen, That ‘70s Show.

That ‘70s Show was one of the funniest teenage rom-comedies ever, set in 1970s (obviously) Wisconsin and revolving around a group of teenage friends throughout their high school years. It was kind of like if The Wonder Years happened a few years later but over coated the wisdom and insight of coming of age with impeccable wit, humor and irony. But don’t get my wrong, there were still plenty of lessons learned by this motley crue during their turbulent years transitioning from adolescent to adulthood.

And, let me just get sidetracked further for a minute, the theme song for the show was probably one of the most memorable and fun of any show ever. (Hangin’ out… down the street… same old thing… we did last week…).

I’m getting nostalgic just thinking about it. I could gab and gab about this show and group of friends, three guys and two girls, forever. It was, for the most part, a pretty freaking good portrayal of a close-nit teenage crew growing up in the neighborhood together, nothing lush, no mansions on a hill, just wasting their days away in central character Eric Forman’s basement.

The basement served much like a stomping ground for all the characters, with most of their best ideas and happiest moments taking place there.

The most notorious recurring scene of the show, “The Circle” also took place here as the gang would sit in a circle as the camera would pan around to each characters face as they spoke, (and smoked… hey, it was the ‘70s) often offering advice on current vendettas or predicaments or insight on life and love.

The basement and the circle is where the group really grew up. It’s where they all learned the ins and outs of adulthood while still being able to remain unchanged in each other’s eyes and remain kids in a time of social and economic change.

Anyway, Kutcher, ever the comedian that he is, played the model-turned-cop Michael Kelso, the, for lack of a better word, idiot, of the group. He was easily the butt or brains of all jokes and pranks but clearly the easiest on the eyes.

Kunis, probably one of the most beautiful women alive (no seriously, I think GQ has said it multiple times) played Jackie Burkhart, the self-centered spoiled brat and youngest member of the group that weaseled her way in the circle when the series began as she started dating Kelso.

And they weren’t even the focal characters or couple on the show.

I’ll admit that both of these two dated different people as the show went on, but everyone always felt that something special between Jackie and Kelso and no one dares ever mention the days when the two ventured to different partners. As far as any fan of this show is concerned, Jackie and Kelso were meant to be and always stayed together.

They were the couple that everyone loved to hate, conceited, going nowhere, just skimming by on their looks and looking so cute while doing it. As I’ve stated, they’re both gorgeous creatures in their own right, but together, they make the most perfect looking couple of all time—in real life or make believe.

The two constantly bickered and bantered, whether they were dating or not, and supplied some of the best one-liners in the shows eight year history. I can only imagine a conversation between them in real life. I’m getting giddy just wondering.

The show was filmed during the late ‘90s and Kunis landed the role when she was only 14 years old. Kutcher, however, was 21. At the time I can imagine how strange and unsettling this fact could be, but now, Kunis being 30 and Kutcher 36, anyone could tell it was only going to be time before these two rekindled their flame.

Kutcher was even Kunis’ first kiss in real life, like, hello, talk about meant to be.

A decade after the show ended the two finally debuted together as a couple and has been inseparable since. It seems it was written in the real life and Hollywood stars.

With recent news of the two’s engagement and even more recent news of a baby on the way, the Jackie-Kelso storyline is finally coming full circle. Pun intended.
