Officials at Cumberland University announced a new degree program in computational science and technology will debut this fall, targeting students who desire a more computer-intensive learning experience and want to solve complex computer challenges.
Computational science studies the methodology of solving complex problems that use concepts and skills from the disciplines of science, computer science and mathematics. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, this is rapidly becoming one of the most popular majors in the country. Forecasters suggest employment in computational science occupations will grow as much as 22 percent by 2020 for programmers with a bachelor’s degree and training in a variety of programming languages. Career paths include internships, graduate school or immediate job placement with the professional certifications available within the program.
“CST is a distinctive, in-demand program geared toward real-life success,” said Paul Stumb, dean of the Labry School of Science, Technology and Business. “At Cumberland, we have the expertise to produce quality computational science graduates that are prepared for lead roles in today’s workforce.”
Members of Cumberland’s Labry School of Science, Technology and Business faculty developed the CST program. The program consists of 120 total credits and will be offered in two tracks. Track one includes emphasis on science and math; and Track II puts emphasis on business and technology. The program is structured to equip students with a broad base of computation skills necessary to analyze and solve real-world problems.
