Scouts build bridge to Eagle badge

Duo combines talents on bridge to link schools

Two members of Life Scout Troop 293 made a difference recently for students at Winfree Bryant Middle School and Byars Dowdy Elementary School by completing their Eagle Scout project.

Seth Key and Will Whitefield recently completed a bridge across the creek that separates the two schools.

"This was a huge project," said Winfree Bryant principal Becky Kegley. "It allowed us to work collaboratively with Byars Dowdy without sending kids through the creek."

Kegley said many of the middle school students volunteer at Byars Dowdy, and before the bridge was completed, the administration would "have to ask them to remove their shoes before coming into the building because of the mud."

Key said the project took about six months to complete. He said there were periods where the duo had to wait for funds to come in before certain parts of the project could be finished.

As to why they chose to build the bridge for their project, both said they hoped to do something memorable.

"I wanted to do something that would actually be used," said Whitefield.

Key said he wanted "something that would last."

Kegley said she was happy the pair chose to build the bridge.

"It's been a wonderful asset already," she said.

"I want to thank Mrs. Kegley for letting us do this and for supporting us," Whitefield said.
