The Lebanon Special School District will hold Parent Sanity Academy to help parents identify and utilize resources within the community.

“We have hosted parent sanity academies in the past, but this one has a focus on several different developmental assets, including support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, commitment to learning, positive values, positive identity and constructive use of time. We will be using new materials we purchased from Free Spirit Publishing. The funding from these materials came from a grant from Middle Tennessee Electric Customers Care,” said Beth Petty, Family Resource Center coordinator.

The workshop is free to anyone in Wilson and surrounding counties. The workshop will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Castle Heights Elementary School library at 1007 N. Castle Heights Ave. The workshop and materials are free, as well as snacks and a light lunch.

“Parents are always looking for ways to engage their children in healthy activities that build self-esteem, allow them to meet other adult role models, develop a sense of team work and have fun,” Petty said.

Guest speakers for the day include Cathey Sweeney with the Wilson County Girl Scouts, Jason Flannery with the Wilson County Boy Scouts, Lebanon Police Officer P.J. Hardy and Debbie Vaughn, Lebanon English as a Second Language teacher. Information on how to sign up for many programs will be available, including adult Spanish classes, Wilson County Civic League Summer Arts Academy, Lebanon Citizen’s Police Academy, Lebanon-Wilson County 4-H and Wilson County Parents as Teachers.

In addition, parents will learn discipline tips, including natural and logical consequences, family meetings, and “I” messages. Retired school counselor Nancy Guethlein will facilitate this part of the workshop.
