Mary Ann Sparks will assume the role of interim director of schools after a unanimous vote at the Wilson County Board of Education’s Monday meeting.
Sparks, who has been with the school system since 1986 and serves as deputy director of talent management. Board member Wayne McNeese nominated her, and a unanimous vote followed.
She expressed her appreciation to the board before taking her seat in the director’s chair.
Following the interim director’s appointment, board member Larry Tomlinson made a motion to begin a search for new director. He also commented on how he would like the search to be conducted.
“I would like for our board to conduct this search on our own, that we don’t engage anyone, that we do it on ourselves. I would like to say that I would like for each one of us to get a list of names of people that might be interested and begin that process,” Tomlinson said.
The board approved the motion unanimously.
In other business, the board considered a proposed addition to Carroll-Oakland Elementary School. The board considered two proposed plans, option A, which places a new parking lot at the rear of the building, and option B, which places a new parking lot beside the building.
“I would like to make a recommendation that we go with layout B, which shows the parking lot on the side of the building,” Tomlinson said. “I realize that there will have to be some additional property purchased. I think we can do that without compromising anything about the project.
“I’ve been told that the county commission has some contingency funds available that they would be willing to spend.”
The board approved option B pending funding by the Wilson County Commission.
