Student charged in teacher assault

Wilson County school resource officers charged a 16-year-old Mt. Juliet High School student with assault after an altercation with a teacher Friday.

The altercation began when the suspect threw Cheetos across the classroom at another student, according to Wilson County school resource officer supervisor Lt. Scott Moore.

He said the teacher told the student to pick up the thrown Cheetos and advised him not to throw them anymore.

The student refused, and the teacher tried to take the Cheetos from the student. The student jerked away from the teacher, and when the teacher tried again the altercation followed.

Moore said this is the point in the story when witness narratives conflict one another. The school resource officers’ investigation included interviews with several classmates of the suspect, and he said consistency was an issue.

“All we know for sure is that the suspect struck the teacher twice with closed fists, because he told us that he did, and the stories said.”

Moore said the stories claim the student struck the teacher causing him to fall to at least one knee. The student struck the teacher once again when the teacher attempted to return to his feet.

The teacher was able to exit the classroom and find another teacher who contacted school resource officers. 

Despite the recent incident at Lebanon High School involving a former assistant football coach and player, Moore said teacher-student altercations are uncommon.

“Obviously in a school that size you’re going to have some one-on-one fights among students, but I’ve been a supervisor for six years, and I can only recall a handful of [teacher-student altercations].”

Moore said there weren’t any apparent injuries to the teacher, which would have worsened the charge to aggravated assault.

The student was suspended as a result of the SRO investigation.
