MCA basketball to play as independent in 2013-14

From staff reports

A cooperative agreement with McClain Christian and Mt. Juliet Christian academies has been approved by the Tennessee Secondary School  Athletic Association.

McClain, which was approved for TSSAA membership last month, will join MJCA for football, baseball, softball and boys' and girls' soccer. Mt. Juliet Christian will join Lebanon-based MCA for bowling, a sport in which the Bulldogs won back-to-back state tournaments in the Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference. Michael Henderson has replaced athletic director Seth Bass as McClain's bowling coach.

MCA will remain an independent in girls' and boys' basketball, volleyball and tennis for the upcoming 2013-14 school year and will not join a TSSAA district or the MTAC.

In football, only junior Daniel Boyer is joining Mt. Juliet Christian's football team from McClain after rushing for 725 yards and catching 412 yards in receiving as a slotback for the eight-man football Bulldogs last fall when they went 4-4 in their only varsity season.

Bass, who is remaining at McClain as AD, has joined MJCA's football staff as assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator under second-year coach Jake Roberts. The pair coached together on Dewayne Alexander's Cumberland staff in 2010 - Bass working with tight ends and Roberts running backs.

"This setup will allow our kids to play some other sports that we have not offered previously, which is obviously beneficial," Bass said. "Clearly I'm disappointed we won't be able to field our football team at MCA this year, but I'm excited to work alongside Coach Roberts again.

"I wish more of my kids would have come over to play, but we're excited to have Daniel nonetheless. He'll be a tremendous asset."
