From staff reports
Class A state champion Friendship Christian has placed three players on the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's all-state team.
Senior pitcher Brennan Swindoll is on the team for the third time, missing only his sophomore season after sitting out the campaign due to Tommy John surgery. He is joined by junior outfielder/pitcher Michael Hawks and senior third baseman/pitcher/designated Austin Godwin.
Swindoll closed out a spectacular career with a 10-2 record and a save in 15 outings covering 73 2/3 innings. He struck out 113, walked 22 and posted a 0.48 earned-run average. He did not allow an earned run in five appearances during tournament play [he was reached for four unearned scores against Trousdale County in the District 8-A tourney], throwing two shutouts in the state tournament, capped by a 4-0 win over Silverdale in the final for the Commanders' second state title.
He also hit, posting a .420 average with three home runs and 15 RBI. He has signed with Chattanooga State Community College.
Making the TSWA team as a utility player, Godwin went 8-0 in 10 appearances on the mound over 51 2/3 innings. He posted a 0.95 ERA with 72 strikeouts and 28 walks. Despite those numbers, Friendship's staff was so deep he didn't pitch in the state tournament. He batted .340 with a home run and 34 RBI. He has signed with Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis.
On a senior-loaded team, Hawks starred as a junior in right field, leading the Commanders with a .426 batting average, three home runs [all grand slams, including one in the state tournament] and a team-high 49 RBI. The left-handed hitter-thrower also pitched, posting a 6-0 record in seven games covering 27 1/3 innings. He walked 13 and whiffed 34 while posting a 1.02 ERA.
