Dove fields wanted: The TWRA is seeking dove fields to lease for the upcoming season, the first segment of which opens Sept. 1.

Landowners can earn up to $2,400 for providing a dove field for public hunting. These fields must be available for a minimum of three priority hunt dates in September.

The TWRA began is leased dove field program in the late 1980s and the program has been very successful in providing quality hunting opportunities. In addition to leased fields, many public dove fields are provided on Wildlife Management Areas.

For information about leasing a field to the TWRA, contact the TWRA regional office: 615-781-6622 or 1-800-624-7506.

Mourning doves are a popular game bird and one of the most widely distributed and abundant birds in North America. More doves are harvested than all other bird species combined in 38 of the continental states.

In Tennessee, about 40,000 hunters bagged approximately 300,000 doves last year.

Purchases of hunting gear, guns and ammo have a major economic impact on the state.

Hot shots: Danny Shaw beat Kerry Hale in a shootoff to win the Cedar City Gun Club’s weekly trap shoot. Both shot 48’s in regulation rounds.

Lucas Green took Junior honors with a 47 and Veteran went to Billy Robb with a 43.

Kerry Hale competed his training for certification as an instructor and will assist with various Wilson County youth competitive-shooting organizations.

Hunter-safety reminder: With the opening of some hunting seasons at hand, the TWRA reminds residents that anyone born after Jan.1, 1969, must complete a Hunter Education Course in order to get a license.

Information about various license requirements and options is available at the TWRA website.

Squirrel season opens Aug. 24 and the first segment of dove season opens Sept. 1. Canada goose season also opens Sept. 1.
