Golden Bears fend off Antioch for 36-28 victory

By Caitlin Rickard

MT. JULIET — The Mt. Juliet Golden Bears kept rolling Friday as they defeated the Antioch Bears 36-28.

Mt. Juliet jumped on Antioch immediately in the first quarter, scoring first on a 1-yard run by quarterback Nolan Chowbay. The Golden Bears used the legs of Kyle Smith and Ben Cheatham to take them downfield before Chowbay ran the final yard.

Justin Dubay kicked the extra point.

Antioch then lost a fumble to turn the ball and momentum right back over to the Golden Bears.

A 22-yard pass from Chowbay to Ahmad Bradley followed by a Dubay kick kept Mt. Juliet on top 14-0 before the second quarter even began.

Antioch answered, driving downfield and scoring on the first play of the second quarter.

KaDarius Hannah ran the ball in from the 2-yard line to put Antioch on the board. Quarterback Raekwon Hosey polished the drive off by running the ball in for the two-point conversion to put the visiting Bears within six.

On the next possession Mt. Juliet answered.

Chowbay tossed the ball 18 yards to Smith to bring the momentum back to Mt. Juliet. The Golden Bears then faked the extra-point attempt and Chowbay completed a pass to Patrick Cartmell in the end zone to bring the score to 22-8.

Mt. Juliet again helped themselves, running the ball downfield behind Jauhar Jackson and finishing the drive on a 25-yard pass from Chowbay to Cartmell.

Dubay’s kick put the Golden Bears up 29-8.

With only  33 seconds left in the half, a quick 69-yard pass from Hosey to Michael Johnson put the Bears within striking distance.

Moses Cornelius ran in the two-point conversion.

Mt. Juliet led at the half 29-16.

Antioch came out with a vengeance though in the third quarter, scoring on its first possession.

Kebrin Peterson took an outside option 46 yards for the score to put Antioch within seven.

Neither team scored again until the fourth quarter when Cornelius ran a touchdown in from two yards out.

Hosey followed the score by throwing an interception during the two-point conversion attempt, leaving the Bears behind Mt. Juliet 29-28.

Mt. Juliet smartly kept the ball on the ground, with runs by Kyle Mahler, Smith, Courtland Douglas and Chowbay.

An Antioch personal foul put Mt. Juliet in scoring range, with the ball on the 3-yard line and a little over two minutes remaining.

Mahler then drove into the end zone for the 36-28 final score.

Mt. Juliet will take a 2-0 record to Station Camp next Friday for a key District 9-AAA battle. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
