Freshman Tanner Harp and sophomore Keaton Gaffney paced the Cumberland cross country teams Saturday night in their first meet of the year at the BROOKS Memphis Twilight Classic at the Mike Rose Complex in Memphis.
The top four placers for the men’s squad were all freshmen, led by Harp’s time of 24:48.69 on the 4.2-mile course. Garang Madut was next in 26:22.01, with Spencer Rearick (28:11.35) and Richie Palmeiri (28:21.47) next. David Cheers (29:25.88), Devin Rickard (29:47.99) and Tyler Shankles (33:05.39) finished out the Bulldog contingent.
Gaffney finished 97th among a field of 151 runners that included competitors from eight NCAA Division I schools, including a pair from the SEC. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native completed the 5K course in 21.51.64.
Freshman Alesa Steiner was next for CU in 24:12.15, with senior Candice Ray (27:38.96) and sophomore Chelsea Reeves (28:35.41) the final two Cumberland participants.
CU will run again Sept. 14 at the Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.
