WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Reed Gurchiek completed a 19-yard touchdown pass in the final quarter, but No. 8 University of the Cumberlands got two special teams scores and D’Angelo Jordan had two long touchdown runs in a 41-10 victory for the Patriots over 25th-ranked Cumberland on Saturday at James H. Taylor II Stadium.

Cumberland (0-2) trailed just 14-3 at the half but a 66-yard TD run by Jordan midway through the third period and another 28-yard scoring jaunt in the final quarter opened the lead for UC. Albert Huntley, the defending NAIA 100-meter track champion, raced 95 yards for the score on the kickoff after the Bulldogs touchdown in the fourth period for the final Patriots score.

Huntley also blocked a punt in the first half and Willie Gibson picked up the bouncing ball, going 15 yards for the score early in the second period. Gibson caught an 18-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, giving the Patriots a 21-3 edge at the time.

Jordan rushed for 137 yards on just seven carries. Cumberland held UC fullback Terrance Cobb to just 43 yards on 11 attempts, though the senior missed much of the first half with an ankle injury.

The Bulldogs put up 173 yards of total offense (just 46 in the first half). Gurchiek finished 11-of-25 for 103 yards and one score and Broc Loveless completed 5-of-9 passes for 18 yards. Both quarterbacks threw an interception as well.

The Patriots completed a 46-yard pass to Gibson on the second play from scrimmage, but three plays later Cobb fumbled and CU’s Jarred Williams recovered. A fumble on an option pitch stymied the next UC drive, but the Bulldogs were unable to move the ball, taking over on both drives deep in their own territory.

A fumble by Michael Nwokoji set-up the home team later in the opening quarter and Adam Craig rushed two yards over the left side for the touchdown three plays later for a 7-0 UC advantage.

Cumberland was finally able to move the ball on its next drive, including a 28-yard completion to Anthony Woodard. Cain Smith also caught a 10-yard pass, but Gurchiek was sacked twice, ending the drive at the UC33.

Devin Guthrie blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter for CU, but Huntley’s blocked punt and the TD by Gibson made it 14-0 Patriots. The Bulldogs did little else on offense before the half, but a Williams strip-sack and fumble return to the UC 26 set-up a score just before the break.

Gurchiek completed a pair of passes but missed DeBoard near the goal line and Beau Baker booted a 28-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 14-3.

Cumberland has this week off before traveling to Belhaven on Sept. 21 for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff in Jackson, Miss. CU will play its first home game on Sept. 28 against Bluefield at Nokes-Lasater Field.
