CARTHAGE — Jajuan Foutch scored three touchdowns on big plays Tuesday night to lift visiting Walter J. Baird past Smith County 38-16.
Foutch scored on runs of 63, 84 and 55 yards on the Blue Devils' first four offensive snaps for a 22-8 lead early in the second quarter.
Deration Shannon, who scored a two-point conversion in the first quarter, followed Tavarus Booker's fumble recovery with a 56-yard touchdown run in which he broke several tackles. Foutch's second two-point run of the second quarter lifted Baird to a 30-8 halftime lead.
Smith County's two touchdowns came on short runs by the fullback after long passes deep into Baird territory. The Owls' second score brought them within 30-14.
Baird's final score came when Eric Daniels won a jump ball in the end zone of a Quinn Suber pass in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Foutch, on the two-point conversion, carried the ball on a sweep, stopped and fired a pass to Suber in the back of the end zone.
Smith County picked up a safety in the closing minutes of the game after Baird snapped the ball over the punter's head. Suber kicked it out of the end zone for two Owl points.
Baird will bring a 4-2 record into next Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. game against Southside at Wilson Central.
