BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Senior Mackenzie Gass recorded a team-high 12 kills en route to a Cumberland straight-set victory over Bluefield, giving the Bulldogs their first Mid-South Conference victory of the season.
CU (7-3, 1-2) controlled the first two sets in convincing fashion, winning both by 25-12 victories. The Bulldogs recorded strong .259 and .371 attack percentages, respectively, in the two wins.
Junior libero McCrea Barney led the back line for Cumberland with 16 digs while junior setter Kasi Wells paced the squad with 31 assists.
The Bulldogs finished the straight-set sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third set. Despite the closer score, Cumberland’s offense continued to click as the squad posted a .464 attack percentage.
Juniors Abby Shaw and Sheridan Jones added nine and seven kills respectively in the Bulldog win.
Cumberland will be back in action Saturday in another MSC contest against Pikeville. The two squads met at the Sewanee Invitational earlier in the season as CU rolled to a 3-1 win. The Bulldogs and Bears are set to square off in Pikeville at 11 a.m.
