MT. JULIET — The Blackman Blaze pitched a first-half shutout en route to a 42-14 win over the host Mt. Juliet Bears Friday night.

Blackman's Chase Murphy accounted for three first-half scores, beginning with the evening's first points on a 4-yard run to make it 7-0 in favor of the visitors at 5:50 of the first quarter. Just shy of three minutes later, Murphy connected with receiver Quentin Hardy for a 38-yard score.

The Blaze took advantage of a short field to begin the second quarter, having started at the Bears' 49-yard line near the end of the first. The fourth play of the second period saw Murphy connect with wideout Styles Corder on a 33-yard strike. Cole Notgrass ran through defenders for a 32-yard score at just under four minutes to play in the half and Charlie Davidson punched in a 1-yard score to give the visitors a 35-0 halftime lead.

"We played a great football team that has a lot of senior leadership," said Bears head coach Trey Perry after his team fell to 2-2. "Blackman's a good program and they physically whipped us tonight."

The Bears' defense allowed one big play on the night, and it turned out to be the final score for the Blaze. Blackman's Jamie Kent took the team's opening play of the third quarter and ran virtually untouched into the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown.

Mt. Juliet got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Jordan Hooper broke the plane on a 4-yard run at 10:42 remaining in the game.

Blackman held the ball for an 11-play drive but the Bear defense forced a turnover on downs and regained possession at their own 28-yard line.

The final score of the evening came with 26 seconds to play as Mt. Juliet's Jake Newby found Ahmad Bradley for a 40-yard score.

"In the second half, we didn't make a lot of adjustments. I think they were more mental adjustments than anything else" Perry said. "We played a lot better."

Next up for the Bears is a visit from Wilson Central next Friday.

"Right now we're 1-1 in the district," Perry said. "As bad as tonight was, that didn't affect that at all; we got to take it one game at a time, and that's a big one."
