Taylor Nay scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half and 20th-ranked Cumberland turned up the intensity after a slugging opening 45 minutes, defeating Trinity International, 2-1, in women’s soccer action Saturday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.

Nay netted a pair of goals just after intermission and Lindsay Kitson made a save in traffic in the final minute to preserve the win over the Trojans (4-1-0). Cumberland ends its five-match homestand Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest against Union University.

Trinity International started quickly, with Samantha Yasantan finding the back of the net unassisted in the fifth minute. The Trojans accounted for two shots in the period, but made one count for the early lead. Trinity keeper Elizabeth Burzynski made four saves in the first half, as well.

The Bulldogs (4-1-0) finally got on the board just after the break, with Nay beating two defenders to a ball down the right side and burying a shot into the upper 90 in the 48th minute.

Less than three minutes later, she lofted a cross from the right sideline that became trouble for Burzynski, who tried to pin the ball to the crossbar but was unable to hold on, with the ball falling over the goal line before she could gain complete control.

The Bulldogs controlled possession for much of the half, forcing three more saves by Burzynski. The Trojans’ last efforts were foiled by a Kitson save in traffic in the final minute, giving Cumberland its second-straight victory and third in four home matches this season.
