Volleydawgs swept by the Cumberlands

Kelsey Eastham tallied 14 kills and Samantha Stuckwisch handed out 26 kills, as the University of the Cumberlands hit .379 and posted a 3-0 victory over Cumberland in volleyball action Tuesday night here at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Bulldogs (9-8, 2-4) managed just 24 kills in the match and hit only .011. Freshman Abby Shaw led CU with six kills and Jennifer Daniels added four. Kasi Wells recorded 13 assists and McCrea Barney added nine digs as well for Cumberland.

Megan Schulte led the Patriots (8-3, 4-3) with five kills in the first set and Eastham added four, as UC used a 13-1 spurt to take a commanding lead en route to a 25-10 victory. Schulte had three kills during the stretch and Morgan Schlatter added two.

Eastham registered five kills on nine attacks in the second set, though Cumberland led much of the set before a 9-1 run put the Patriots ahead, 15-10. Kills from Daniels, Shaw and Michelle Evans gave Cumberland a 10-6 edge before the UC spurt, highlighted by three kills from Eastham and one each by Schlatter and Stuckwisch. The visitors won the set, 25-15.

Eastham added five more kills on six attacks in the final set, as UC jumped out early and used an 8-2 run to pull away before winning 25-17. Stuckwisch posted three kills during the stretch and Eastham and Jennifer Philpot each had one.

CU will host Rio Grande on Thursday at 6 p.m. before this weekend’s Cumberland Classic, which will feature seven teams and 13 matches over two days in the Dallas Floyd Center
