Lebanon got off to a slow start Friday night and Cookeville’s defense was on lockdown from start to finish as the Cavaliers spoiled the Blue Devils’ Senior Night with a 16-0 shutout at Clifton Tribble Field/Danny Watkins Stadium.
The Cavaliers scored all of their points in the first quarter. Running back Cameron Germenis scored both touchdowns on a 58-yard run out of the wildcats and a 34-yard screen pass from Jacob Edgington.
Lebanon’s special teams bit the Blue Devils again when punter Christian Haffner had to jump for a snap and was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
“[Slow starts] have been a pattern all year except the Mt. Juliet game,” Lebanon coach Sam Harp said after his Blue Devils dropped to 1-5 with four road games left this season. “We’ve shot ourselves in the foot. We’ve given teams gifts in the first quarter and we have never been able to recover, especially tonight.
“We played our best football game last week and, I don’t know, maybe we thought we arrived or something. Obviously, I’m not getting the job done right now. I’ve got to do a better job somehow getting these kids realizing they have to come to practice every day being focused and do those things you’re supposed to do. Obviously, I still have not reached them.”
Lebanon’s defense kept Cookeville at bay the rest of the way, getting interceptions from Eddie McDaniels and Marqualis Williams and a late fumble recovery from Julian Crutchfield.
But aside from a 63-yard Taye Davis run in the second quarter, Lebanon’s offense showed little life as the Blue Devils were held to six first downs and 117 yards. Cookeville also blocked a 37-yard Cameron Harris field-goal try.
Cookeville made the most of 233 yards of offense to improve to 5-1.
“If you told me prior to this game they would shut us out, I would be saying you were crazy,” Harp said. “Again, you got to give credit to Cookeville.
“They played good football and we didn’t, plain and simple.”
Lebanon will begin its season-ending four-game road swing at Gallatin’s Calvin Short Field against the Green Wave at 7 p.m. next Friday.
