GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cumberland’s Alena Gizdić reached the quarterfinals in singles and Gizdić and Angelica Sepulveda lost in the semifinals in doubles, leading the Cumberland women’s tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional last weekend.
The tournament is the only fall competition for the squad.
Gizdić posted a pair of singles victories, defeating Brescia University’s Jana Lidenthal, 6-3, 6-0, in the Round of 32 and Alejandra Matiz, 6-0, 6-4, before falling to Lindsey Wilson’s Alicia Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Sepulveda won her opening-round match, 6-0, 6-1, versus Sydni Grimes from the University of the Cumberlands before dropping a 6-2, 6-3, decision to Rodriguez in the Round of 16. Four other Cumberland players lost in their first match, as Abby Wilson dropped a 6-3, 6-2, decision to Milligan College’s Celeste Carpenter (round of 64); Frankie Jecker lost 7-6, 7-5, to Georgetown College’s Jacqueline Otis (round of 64); Tais Lacerda Bezerra dropped a 7-6, 4-6, 10-8, decision to Georgetown’s Kelly Swanson (round of 64); and Sandra Munoz Poletti lost 6-3, 6-3, versus Georgetown’s Emily Krick (round of 32).
Munoz Poletti picked up the wins in the backdraw, including 8-0 against Bethel University’s Shelby Kennedy, a withdrawal versus Brescia’s Tarsilla Duck and a victory over Martin Methodist’s when he retired ahead, 5-2.
Wilson defeated Martin Methodist’s Ashlee Elkins, 8-0, before falling 8-2, to Georgetown’s Alyssa Kennedy, while Lacerda Bezerra posted an 8-4 victory over Asbury University’s Alex LoPrinzi before losing to Campbellsville’s Jenna Sallee. Sallee also defeated Jecker, 8-6.
In doubles Gizdić and Sepulveda defeated Grimes and Chanel Williams from the University of the Cumberlands, 8-0, in the Round of 16 and won 8-1 versus Milligan’s Carpenter and Sarah Rainwater before dropping an 8-5 decision to Lindsey Wilson’s Sarah Bernos and Alejandra Galvis.
Lacerda Bezerra and Jecker picked up an 8-1 win against Martin Methodist’s Elkins and Rebakah Harwell but lost 8-2 to Carpenter and Rainwater. Munoz Poletti and Wilson dropped an 8-4 decision to Milligan’s Ahmee Kelly and Caroline Morelli in the round of 32.
