Five place in top 20 for CU runners

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Keaton Gaffney placed eighth overall and Zeddy Koech, Alesa Steiner, Garang Madut and Tanner Harp all placed in the top 20, leading Cumberland’s cross country teams Saturday at the 43rd Annual Patty Forgey Invitational.

The Mid-South Conference Championships will be run on the same course in November.

Gaffney, a sophomore from Mt. Juliet, led the women’s team for the third time in three events, finishing eighth on the 5K course with a time of 21:55.50. Koech, a junior from Eldoret, Kenya, placed 15th in 22:59.08, while Steiner and Emily Thurman, both freshmen, were 20th and 21st, respectively, with times of 23:56.52 and 24:41.17.

Senior Candice Ray placed 24th (25:48.25) and sophomore Chelsea Reeves was 30th (27:09.87).

On the men’s side, Madut was the top finisher for the first time this season and Harp was second among the Bulldog finishers, with the duo finishing 16th and 18th, respectively, with times of 29:39.66 and 29:44.36. Freshmen Spencer Rearick and Richie Palmeiri placed 30th and 31st as well with times of 33:07.98 and 33:23.31, while juniors David Cheers (34:42.10) and Devin Rickard (35:06.53) were 36th and 37th.

Cumberland will run again next Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky.
