Botts, Broyles both shoot 70 in MSC Fall Invit.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Sophomores Ryan Botts and Peyton Broyles both fired two-under par rounds of 70, senior Austin Garrett was one-under and freshman Zach Johnson finished at even par, helping the Cumberland men’s golf team to a six-shot lead after the first round of the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club.

Botts and Broyles are tied for the individual lead along with Lindsey Wilson’s Frank Medale and Michael Popsisil from the University of the Cumberlands. Garrett is one shot back along with Stephen Marbach from the Cumberlands and Johnson is in a group of five players tied for seventh and two shots off the lead.

Botts shot two under on the front nine on the par-72, 6,838-yard Cherry Blossom course. Botts won his event last fall in his first-ever collegiate tournament, carding a first-round 65 en route to victory.

Broyles was better on the back nine on Monday, posting a score of three-under on that side after shooting one-over in his first nine holes. Garrett registered one-under on the back nine as well and Johnson posted even par scores on both sides.

Freshman Ian Whittamore is tied for 33rd after shooting 79, while freshmen Zach Kean and Jake Dailey both carded rounds of 80, tied for 35th.

The second round continues Tuesday in the fall conference event, with the scores counting in the running for MSC Player of the Year and All-Mid-South Conference awards in the spring.

Legge tied for eighth at MSC Fall tourney

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Junior Katie Legge carded an opening-round 79 and seniors Kayla Smith and Lindsey Taylor are both in the Top 25, leading the Cumberland women’s golf team Monday at the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club.

Legge shot seven-over par and is tied for eighth, six shots off the lead, after the first round on the par-72, 5,752-yard Cherry Blossom course. She was two-over after the opening nine before struggling a bit on the back side in her round.

Smith registered an 84 and Taylor shot 85, tied for 22nd and 24th, respectively. Smith shot three-over on the front nine before carding a 45 on the back side, while Taylor posted scores of 42-43.

Sophomore Quincy Hogan is tied for 30th after recording an opening-round 89, while freshmen Kaleigh Chitwood and Carson McKinney shot 91 and 98, tied for 34th and 40th, respectively.

As a team Cumberland sits in fifth place, eight shots behind the University of Pikeville but just 15 shots from second place Lindsey Wilson.

The second round will continue today in the fall conference event, with the scores counting in the running for MSC Player of the Year and All-Mid-South Conference awards in the spring.
