WATERTOWN — Watertown had its two game winning streak
snapped Friday night in a 28-13 loss to long-time rival Gordonsville at Robinson Stadium.
"We are just making too many mistakes right now." Watertown coach Gavin Webster said after the game as Watertown dropped to 2-5 for the season and 1-2 in District 8-A play.
After the teams traded punts early, Watertown took over at its own 41-yard line. The Purple Tigers proceeded to drive the ball 59 yards in 11 plays capped by a 4-yard pass to Hunter Warren from Ty Jobe giving the Purple Tigers the early 7-0 lead.
It was a battle of field position most of the first half as both defenses were ready and stopped the other.
Gordonsville, which has visited what is now called Robinson Stadium for as long as football has been played on that plot of ground, tied the game on a mistake by Watertown. A bad snap on a punt was downed at the Purple Tiger 19-yard line. From there, the visiting Tigers scored on four plays on a 1-yard run by Kaelin Cason. It was be the first of two scores on the night for Cason, one of the few returning starters from last year’s Class 1A state champions who finished with 172 yards on 32 carries.
Late in the first half, Watertown scored to take the lead into halftime on a seven-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 22-yard run by Luke Turner, who finished the game with 109 on 19 carries.
Gordonsville was driving late in the second quarter for a score but a pass was
intercepted by Kendal Newcome to close the first half.
Gordonsville got the ball to open the second half, and on the second play, the ball was popped into the air on a hit and Brady Swann came away with the recovery at the visitors’ 41-yard line.
Later in the drive, however, backup quarterback Seth Price threw an interception to Taylor Hunt, who returned it 75 yards for a touchdown making the score 14-13.
Watertown had a hard time moving the ball in the second half, only making two first downs. Gordonsville on the other hand had 12 and scored twice more to put the game out of reach.
The first score was a 1-yard run by Cason late in the third quarter.
The final score came through the air on a 53-yard pass to Austin Vaden from Noah Smotherman.
Watertown will play host to Jo Byrns next week for Senior Night. It will be the Purple Tigers’ final game at the old stadium they’ve called home for almost a century. The team will move into a new stadium on its new Sparta Pike campus next year.
