WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Mackenzie Gass and Abby Shaw each recorded a match-high 10 kills in a losing effort as Cumberland fell to University of the Cumberlands in straight sets Tuesday at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
CU fell to 12-12 overall with a 3-6 mark in Mid-South Conference play. The squad will continue MSC action on the road against St. Catharine College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, hitting just .067 in the opening set en route to a 25-17 defeat before responding with a much better effort, attacking at a .333 mark in the second, a 27-25 UC victory putting the Patriots in control of the match.
UC brought the match to a close with a 25-19 advantage in the third and final set. The Patriots hit .226 in the match and dominated the net with a team-total 13 blocks.
Setters Kasi Wells and Meghan Gass paced the Bulldogs with 13 and 11 assists, respectively, while Karli Collins’ 11 digs led the team.
The loss marked the fourth straight for CU, which fell to .500 on the season for the first time this year. The Bulldogs have 10 games left on the season, including nine against MSC foes along with a home contest against Trevecca Nazarene on Oct. 22.
