Cumberland students are enjoying fall break, but Saturday was no day at the beach for the Bulldog football team in a 44-7 loss to visiting Faulkner at Nokes-Lasater Field.
The Bulldog defense fought gamely for much of the first half, holding Faukner’s powerful offense to three field goals until late in the second quarter.
But Cumberland’s offense got little accomplished on a partly cloudy, cool and breezy afternoon, wearing down the Dawg defense as the Eagles compiled 602 yards of total offense to CU’s 185 and 32 first downs to 12.
Faulkner passers threw 62 times, completing 40 to 12 receivers for 531 yards. Starter Josh Hollingsworth hit 34 of 53 tosses for 486 yards and three touchdowns before calling it a day in the fourth quarter. Backup David Cochran finished the game 6-of-9 for 45 yards and a score. All four TD tosses went to different pass catchers as the No. 19 Eagles returned home to Montgomery, Ala., 5-2 for the season and 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference West Division.
Cumberland quarterbacks Reed Gurchiek and Broc Loveless were held to 104 passing yards on 14-of-31 with three interceptions while Bulldog runners were held to 81 yards as CU’s four-game winning streak ended and the home team fell to 4-3, 1-1.
Gurchiek averted the shutout when he passed 18 yards to Michael Green in the corner of the end zone in the closing seconds of the third quarter to draw the Dawgs within 23-7.
“We played tough on defense in the first half,” Cumberland coach Donnie Suber said. “The guys played hard, they played with class, they played with character and that’s all I can ask of them.
“We tried to press them a little bit on offense and we had a couple of interceptions. I made a bad call on that fake punt [in the second quarter which set up Faulkner’s first touchdown] and we didn’t get it and they got it on the 40-yard line. That’s chances we needed to take. I tried to get the momentum back and it didn’t work out. That seven points is on me.”
“We had to play a clean game and we had to be able to move the ball and get some points on the board and we didn’t do it on this day and they were better than we were for three hours.”
Cumberland ended a four-game homestand with a 3-1 record. The Bulldogs will travel to Campbellsville this coming Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. CDT game before returning to Nokes-Lasater on Nov. 2 for Senior Day against Bethel.
