For the second straight game, Shauna Gilpin netted two goals and Rhianne Parsons posted a goal and an assist, as 11th-ranked Cumberland upped its unbeaten streak to 11 matches in a 4-0 victory over the University of Rio Grande in women’s soccer action Sunday in Rio Grande, Ohio.
Gilpin added to her team-leading goal total with Nos. 11 and 12 on the year, including a score in the fourth minute on an assist from Parsons for an early lead. Parsons registered her 10th goal of the season in the 32nd minute and the Bulldogs led 2-0 at intermission.
Senior Michelle Ward scored the first goal of her four-year Cumberland career in the 70th minute and Gilpin recorded her final score in the 85th minute. Cumberland outshot the Red Storm, 26-3, in the match, taking 13 shots in each period, and would have won by a larger margin if not 13 saves by Rio Grande’s Allison Keeney.
Cumberland’s Lindsay Kitson made two saves in net, registering her eighth shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs play their final home match of the season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Bluefield College. Seniors Rhianne Parsons, Taylor Schrank and Ward will be honored at the conclusion of the match and before the men’s team takes on the Rams. With a victory versus Bluefield, Cumberland can secure its first regular season conference championship.
